Mohamad S. Orabi

Ph.D. Candidate in Mechanical Engineering, University of Michigan

Research Associate and Lecturer

I was born in Lebanon and grew up in Saida City, went to school in Beirut, LB (American University of Beirut). I am a sociable person who is always ready to chill and go for a walk and talk. I love to read, travel, and workout. I circumnavigated around the world to more than 6 countries and planning to visit more after getting my Ph.D. I volunteer regularly and am passionate about social good, science, and biotechnology.
Currently, I am working toward finishing my dissertation in my Ph.D. journey in mechanical engineering. My research focuses on studying the biomechanics-mechanobiology interface on stem cell differentiation under hypoxic and diabetic conditions in embedded systems. I work also with fluid mechanics and Multiphysics model systems where I use COMSOL for the optimization of microfluidic and medical devices I design and model. I use the cleanroom in the Bioengineering complex at the University of Michigan for fabricating microfluidic devices following the soft-lithography technique and my customized 3D printer for device printing following the fused deposition modeling approach. I love coding! Usually, I use MATLAB for the optimization of material properties and geometric parameters in microfluidics.
In my master’s degree, I developed a thermo-fluid model on MATLAB to design and optimize a dew point indirect evaporative cooler. Then I used ANSYS-Fluent for computational fluid dynamics simulations for the space model (poultry house) we used. Since I like the hands-on experience, I fabricated an experimental setup and conducted experiments to validate the developed model.
I don’t like laziness. If you are nice, I will go out of my way to help you. I always appreciate being on time with meetings and submissions. I like to treat people with respect, and I enjoy helping others whether in research or the general things in life.
